With the presidential election just around the corner, political arguments become more intense each day. People debate many facts about candidates, good and bad, in order to persuade peoples' votes. However, too many people have stopped forming opinions about candidates based on important factors such as political views and ideas, and have made judgments based solely on race, religion, and gender.
For instance, when people want to make Barack Obama look bad in the eye of the public, they point out a piece of his educational background in which he attended a Muslim school. Although this is true, it was only for a very short time period, and it does make him a Muslim, as some have tried to deceive. Furthermore, this should not affect anyone's opinion about Obama as a presidential candidate because his religious background has nothing to do with his political ideas, which should be the public's main focus.
Moreover, race has clouded a large part of Obama's campaign. He is often referred to as a black man running for president as if his skin color negatively affects his abilities. Some people do not even take the time to learn about his ideas; they simply decide he is not capable based on the fact that he is black. This is yet another example of political views taking a back seat to race, religion, and gender.
Finally, in the upcoming election, much controversy has been created over Hilary Clinton running for president simply because she is a woman. Much of the fuss is coming from people who believe a woman will not be strong enough to handle to powerful task of being president. Although, women have proved themselves worthy in other professional situations, they are still viewed by many people as weaker than men. Therefore, some members of society do not even give Hilary Clinton a chance at gaining their vote just because she is a female; they don't even care to learn about her political views and abilities even though they may be just as efficient as some male candidates. On the other hand, some people are on her side only because they want to see a woman become president.
When it comes down to the final election, it's frightening to see how many unimportant factors stand in front of the most important parts of choosing a president. It's unclear whether the proper candidate will be elected based on race, religion, and gender rather than qualifications and political views.
